7 Methods to Get What You Want from Your Hairdresser

"You deserve to get what you want. After all, you're the client." — David Groshen

David Groshen suggests you follow these seven simple steps to get exactly what you want from your stylist.

  1. Think About What You Want
Look at people on the street, at work, in your social circles. Browse through magazines. If you see something that appeals to you clip it. Keep in mind your hair's natural texture and color and the shape of your face.
  2. Express Yourself
Talk to your stylist. Explain what you're thinking. Describe yourself, your work, your lifestyle, how much time you have to spend on your hair, and the look you are after.
  3. Listen Carefully
Ask questions. Your stylist's response is key. Are their opinions about hair design similar to yours? Most importantly are they willing to work with you to achieve your goals?
  4. Disagreeing Doesn't Mean Being Disagreeable
If you don't agree, say so. You'll get more out of your stylist if you disagree in a way that doesn't alienate them.
  5. Make A Decision
Ask all the questions you like, including your stylists' opinion. But the final choice is yours alone. You are the one who will be wearing the style until your next visit. You must make the final call.
  6. Watch the Hairstyle While It Is Happening
Observe how the cut is progressing. The execution should be according to the plan you discussed beforehand. If not, speak up! Watch how your stylist styles your hair. Is the finished product something you can repeat by yourself? Ask your stylist to explain the styling process to you. It's important to understand how to maintain your look.
  7. Give Yourself A Couple of Days to Like Your Hairstyle
If you discover a legitimate mistake, tell your stylist. Are they annoyed? Do they try to blame you? If so, you are in the wrong salon.
